Casa Lupita: A Harmonious Blend of Colonial and Contemporary Architecture

Binomio Taller's Award-Winning Restoration Project in Merida, Mexico

Located in the heart of Merida, Yucatan's Historic Center, Casa Lupita stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of colonial and contemporary architecture. This restoration project by Binomio Taller pays tribute to the classic colonial architecture of Merida's historic neighborhoods, while injecting new life into a historic site that was previously in disuse.

Binomio Taller's conceptual premise for Casa Lupita was the juxtaposition of colonial and contemporary architecture. The nineteenth-century casona was carefully restored, and the add-on built during the 1960s was demolished to give way to the traditional central patio layout. The result is a residential house that respects its historical roots while embracing modern design elements.

The unique properties of Casa Lupita lie in its respectful integration into its physical context and time. The project involved not only architectural restoration but also interior, furniture, and landscape design. The original structure, protected as a heritage site, presented a significant challenge, requiring adherence to specific norms and guidelines. However, Binomio Taller successfully navigated these challenges, using a combination of traditional artisanal building methods and modern construction to achieve the end result.

Technical specifications of the project reveal the scale of the undertaking. With a lot size of 11 x 30 m and a building area of 320 m2, the project required in-depth research of traditional building methods and materials for the restoration aspect. This research, coupled with an understanding of the area's colonial architecture and the regulations for historic sites, was crucial to the project's success.

Binomio Taller's Casa Lupita is not only a design achievement but also a recognized award winner. The project was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. It is a testament to the project's strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and remarkable level of excellence.

The project was a collaborative effort, with team members Maya Ruz, Raquel Rodriguez, Carlos Sarzo, and Daniel Moguel contributing their skills and expertise. The stunning visuals of Casa Lupita were captured by photographer Tamara Uribe, whose images further highlight the project's unique blend of colonial and contemporary design.

In conclusion, Casa Lupita is a shining example of how thoughtful design and careful restoration can breathe new life into historic sites. By respecting the past while embracing the future, Binomio Taller has created a residential house that is not only a comfortable living space but also a tribute to Merida's rich architectural heritage.
